Latin is a case driven language when it comes to its nouns. Cases are where the spelling of the word slightly changes based on the use of the noun in the sentence. You are very aware of this as we have learned the five principal cases of Latin that are preserved in other languages. German has a dative case, Russian has all the Latin cases. English preserves cases for its personal pronouns but more on this later.
Here are three videos covering in order the first, second and third declensions as found on page 187 of our text. Look on that page and follow along with each video.
Focus on the dative case in each video as that is our topic now.

Nouns and Datives
Dative case uses
Sometimes words can look like datives when they are ablative, read page 191 and take on this exercise:
Dative or Ablative
Nouns are made more interesting with descriptions contained in adjectives. These come as two types: first/second declension and third declension. Look at page 188 for examples of these. The first video covers first/second declension adjectives and the next one covers the third declension. There are no other adjectives in the fourth or fifth declensions. So this is it for the adjectives.

Review the culture of this era with this exercise:
culture
Translate the story of page 185 into your notebooks. So you see the arch on page 185? These usually recognized outstanding accomplishments of generals or emperors. Today, with special permission, you can walk a staircase inside the arch to the top; although, this access is not open to the public. The arch itself was a Roman invention that revolutionized architecture since interior spans were allowed without interior supports creating vast open areas indoors.
