The verb forms learned so far have all been active and now we will learn one passive form. The good news is that this set of endings will work with three tenses: present, imperfect and future. Watch this for a discussion of what the passive voice is in English then Latin.
On page 23 are the Latin forms for the present passive. Another video will help.
Page 24 may look overwhelming but notice that all the forms are just variations on the present tense above. It's very logical making it rather easy. It's the English you will struggle with, you know, the language you are already fluent in. Ironic. This is a good reason to study Latin: you will really learn what you think you know -- but don't. When English teachers tell you to avoid passive voice, now you will know what they mean, and they are right. Passives are harder to read than actives and require a back reading to identify the actor and action. Watch this video for the imperfect passive.
Now let's do the future passive, comparing to the forms on page 24.
Now you have the first three tenses of the passive voice. Notice the verb 'sum' does not have any passive forms. The verb 'to be' does not need them. Let's do some practice exercises to learn thoroughly these verb forms and the English to them.

Since verbs are a driver in Romance languages, it's important to understand them well. Here are three exercises for the above tense, use page 24 to help you.
present
imperfect
future
Master writers of the English language know how to make their writing interesting, that's why it sells. A writing 'trick' is on top of page 23 discussing the 'vivid or historic present.' It is a short paragraph, read it. It shows how a writer starts a paragraph using past tense verbs but switches to present tense to create awareness in the reader. Also, it makes the reading easier. It's a powerful trick and the writer is manipulating how you think about the scene s/he creates in the story. After you read that short paragraph try this exercise for your understanding.
vivid or historic present
Culture lesson. Rome had it problems on a social level and political. Read pages 26 through 29 to understand some of the individuals involved. The book gives us some 'trees', if you will, in the forest of the story. The video below is a good description of the society and tensions within the very early years of the Republic -- this is the time before the Emperors who come last in Roman history. The social and economic tensions ultimately boil over into the creation of the Empire out of the Republic. The distinction is that the Republic was controlled by the Senate while the Empire was controlled by the Emperors.

The story on page 21 is continued onto 22. So be sure to translate the sentences numbered. You may want to break this into two translations. So if you do this, do the first translation to line 15, then the second from 15 to the end. Complete this work in your notebooks.
