We still need to develop facility with the Imperfect Tense. We will repeat the lesson with regular verbs and do a review of the Present Tense as well. The regular verbs are those in the four conjugations identified by their infinitives: 1) -are; 2) -ere; 3 -ere; 4) -ire. It's not shown here but the second infinitive has an '-' above the first 'e.' It looks like a long mark that you are used to seeing in English. Look on page 271 for a complete listing. But don't get overwhelmed with that page, much of it repeats the first column and is easy once it is explained. Just look at the Present and Imperfect Tenses for all four conjugations.
Try two of the exercises in this lesson. They can be good for really learning the forms.
Four Exercises
All languages have irregular verb forms. The verb irregular in all languages is the verb 'to be' since it gets the most use. Any word used with high frequency becomes idiomatic. The word 'idiomatic' in Greek means 'his/her/its own' and is found in words like 'idiom, idiopathic and idiot.' There are really only five important idiomatic verbs in Latin and they wonderfully mimic each other; although, the verb 'possum' is just a variation on 'sum' as we studied before. The same is true of the four verbs listed on page 128. Here are two videos. The first one is a review of the basic and important verb "to be" or "sum, esse" in Latin. Watch that video as a review then move to the second regarding the irregular verbs. Watch these videos:
